The ivory tower of academia does not protect its workers. Across the country, austerity politics are bleeding colleges and universities dry, opening the door for the corporate takeover of higher education. But, like their colleagues in elementary and secondary education, higher education workers are fighting back.
Join Labor Notes staff member Barbara Madeloni on Tuesday, May 7 at 8:00 p.m. EST for a video webinar during which we will hear from students, faculty, and staff about how they are organizing for power and winning on campuses across the country.
This event is free, but you must register here to attend.
We will hear from:
* A representative from the Union of Grinnell Student Dining Workers, who started by organizing student dining workers and built up to organizing all student workers on campus;
* A representative from the University of Illinois Chicago Graduate Employee Organization, who were just out on strike and won a 4.5 percent annual wage increase;
* A representative from the Rutgers University Professors (AAUP-AFT), whose credible strike threat led to a game changing victory;
* A representative from the newly elected progressive caucus of the United University Professions at Stony Brook University.
