Body:
The government of Indonesia, in cooperation with private and public sugar employers, is thwarting sugar workers' rights in Indonesia. The sugar worker union president, Daud Sukamto, has been fired, and management, through harassment and intimidation,
has pressured locals to resign from the union.
The Federation of Independent Tobacco, Cane and Sugar Workers' Union (FSPM TG) was officially registered in February 2005. FSPM TG is affiliated with the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied
Workers' Associations (IUF). Soon after the establishment of the union, harassment of members and union officials began.
Daud Sukamto was fired at the request of Gunung Madu management, a large sugar employer, after Sukamto initiated a wage increase for union members.
Worse, Kediri City Manpower office (a government labor office) has recently claimed that FSPM TG registration has expired -- although it registered, officially and legally, a year ago.
Two other union officials have been written letters threatening "physical action" to be taken against them, and one of these men
has been constantly followed by two men, who sit in a car outside his home, for several months.
Contact the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and the current Minister of Manpower and Transmigration, Mr. Erman Suparno, to tell them to stop these violations, reinstate Daud Sukamto, and reinstate the union.
Write Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President, Republic of Indonesia, Presidential Palace; Jakarta Istana Negara, Indonesia.
Fax him at (62) 21 345 7782. Contact Mr. Suparno at tjepy@nakertrans.go.id, or write him at the same address.
