BACKGROUND
You’re invited to join us for the first (early) celebration of 30 years of Labor Notes.
Come to the UE Hall at 37 S. Ashland on Friday, September 5 at 7 pm to network with Chicagoland labor activists and support Labor Notes as we continue to “put the movement back in the labor movement” for years to come.
Since 1979, Labor Notes as a magazine and organizing project has been building bridges between workers in different industries, unions, workers centers, and countries. We’ll celebrate this legacy and hear from:
Jorge Mujica, an immigrant rights activist from Chicago, on fighting against the crackdown on immigrant workers. Dan La Botz will update us on the situation facing Mexican unionists, and a member of Teamsters 743 will update us on their work to build a strong, democratic local in Chicago. Paul Abowd from Labor Notes will report back on the recent Labor Notes conference, “Rebuilding Labor’s Power.”
Like all Labor Notes events, the speakers in the front of the room will be a small (and brief) selection from the many labor activists in the movement.
Labor’s a whole lot stronger when we bridge divides to share tactics and develop strategies together—a central feature of Labor Notes’ publications, workshops, and conferences. With your support, we can bring the power and promise of the Labor Notes network to Chicago with a one-day “Troublemakers School” workshop in 2009.
If you can not make it to this one-of-a-kind event, please consider a donation to support the Troublemakers School and other projects aimed toward strengthening our movement, one member at a time. Checks can be written out to “Labor Notes” and earmarked "Chicago Houseparty." Mail to Labor Notes, 7435 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48210.
Donations can be made online at www.labornotes.org/donate [3].
