Open Ballot Access for Labor Candidates

Body:

Pro-labor folks throughout South Carolina are working to get the Labor Party on the ballot in the state's elections. To do this, the party must round up 10,000 signatures from registered voters.

South Carolina currently has no minimum wage and has the seventh slowest wage growth in the United States. Its job growth ranks 48th in the nation, while its unemployment rate is second highest. More than 600,000 South Carolinians lack health insurance.

Instead of dealing with these problems, politicians from both major parties have promoted their state's low wages in attempts to attract big business to the state.

While Republicans use issues like same-sex marriage, flying the Confederate flag at the State Capitol, and banning evolution from public schools to divide workers, they ignore South Carolina's most fundamental needs.

The Labor Party plans to build on progressive initiatives and organizations already established in the state. South Carolina AFL-CIO President Donna Dewitt is putting full support behind the party, saying, "We believe the time has come to build a real political alternative--and change the terms of political debate in our state. We are convinced that it is time for South Carolina's workers to begin to speak clearly with their own political voice."

To support the South Carolina campaign, you can contribute online at www.thelaborparty.org or send checks payable to Labor Party with "South Carolina" written in the memo line.
