Excerpt:

Leaders of the Service Employees International Union launched what appeared to be a carefully crafted plan on April 12 to disrupt parts of the Labor Notes conference, where contingents from a dissident SEIU local, a new reform caucus within SEIU, and a competing union were in attendance. . . .

Although the two-month-old strike at parts-maker American Axle has shut down 30 General Motors plants and idled more than 40,000 GM workers, the United Auto Workers appear unable or unwilling to make use of their leverage to reach a settlement. . . .

The ongoing debate about the Canadian Auto Workers in these pages isn’t about particular tactics, it isn’t about whether or not to consider new and creative approaches (who could oppose that?), and it isn’t about underestimating the very real challenges that Canada’s largest private sector union (and all unions) face today. . . .

Striking members of Puerto Rico’s teachers union, the Federación de Maestros de Puerto Rico (FMPR) voted to end their strike March 5. Lasting two weeks, the teachers’ strike paralyzed classes at most of the island’s 1,500 public schools, thanks in large part to the hundreds of thousands of parents who kept their children home from school. . . .

Viewpoint: CAW Committed to Militancy, Movement Unionism

Excerpt:

Labor activism has never been limited to a single tactic or channel. It is this point that Herman Rosenfeld fails to recognize in his Viewpoint criticizing the recent direction of the Canadian Auto Workers union (see Labor Notes February 2008). . . .

Is Fighting for Justice at Smithfield Racketeering?

Excerpt:

Is it illegal for an activist group or union to criticize a company’s business practices? Is it a “conspiracy” if advocates call for boycotts, organize rallies, or press for resolutions from elected bodies? Smithfield Foods, the largest producer of pork products in the world, is hoping so, after a lawsuit it filed last October passed an initial court challenge. . . .

A long-simmering dispute over the direction of the Service Employees has erupted inside the union, pitting leaders of the 150,000-member United Healthcare Workers—West against top International officials. UHW President Sal Rosselli and other executive board members contend that the International is taking too much control of organizing and bargaining contracts away from local unions. . . .

Excerpt:

Pounding the pavement in a two-month tour of cities throughout the Midwest and West Coast, four fired United Auto Workers members have been busy speaking to supporters in a quest to get their jobs back. Questions about the effect concessionary bargaining and shortcut neutrality agreements may have on the future of new member organizing in the South are frequently raised at their meetings. . . .

The National Labor Relations Board rewrote in September a 40-year-old doctrine that will undermine one of labor’s more successful organizing tactics—card-check recognition. . . .

TV lovers get ready for more re-runs ahead. On November 5 more than 12,000 television and screenwriters, members of the Writers Guild of America, traded in their pens for picket signs. Industry insiders predict the strike could last well into 2008, and writers are preparing for a long battle. . . .

Leading a strike that one hospital administrator said cost her $1 million a day, 5,000 registered nurses at 10 Northern California hospitals in the Sutter Health chain walked off their jobs for two days in mid-October. Five facilities locked out striking nurses for an additional one to three days when the strike, the largest among nurses in a decade, was over.
Viewpoint: One-Sided Class War: The UAW-GM 2007 Negotiations

In 1978, then United Auto Workers (UAW) President Douglas Fraser, frustrated with corporate America's new aggressiveness, accused employers of waging a "one-sided class war against working people, the unemployed, the poor, the minorities, the very young and the very old, and even many in the middle class of our society." In response, he warned, "we in the UAW intend to reforge the links with those who believe in struggle: the kind of people who sat-down in the factories in the 1930s and who marched in Selma in the 1960s." . . . .

Excerpt:

Tobacco kills in many ways. Long before that first puff lies yet more lethality, hidden in the fields where the tobacco leaf is grown. Last year alone, heat stroke claimed nine North Carolina field workers. A new force is joining tobacco pickers as they go about their dangerous, backbreaking work, one that promises to organize the workers to change those conditions. . . .

Negotiations between the Big Three automakers and the United Auto Workers (UAW) were anything but predictable this year. Nationwide strikes at both General Motors and Chrysler, givebacks on an unprecedented scale, and the stirrings of a strong “vote no” opposition inside the union rocked the old auto pattern agreement playbook. . . .

Excerpt:

The deportation of immigrant rights activist Elvira Arellano by federal authorities on August 20 was a blow aimed at the immigrant rights movement. Arellano, a 32-year old single mother who had spent a year living in a Chicago church in defiance of a deportation order, had become a spokesperson for the New Sanctuary Movement, which focuses on how immigration law and immigration authorities have separated families, and a symbol of resistance for the broader immigrant rights movement.

Excerpt:

[Editor’s Note: The following interview with Paul Krehbiel, a long-time labor activist, is meant to spark dialogue and debate about the role staff unions play inside unions.] Paul Krehbiel has been active in the labor movement since 1968, first as a rank-and-file member in an auto parts factory in Buffalo, and later as a full-time union representative. In 1998, he went on staff at Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 660 in Los Angeles, and helped organize stewards councils at the two largest L.A. County hospitals...

Landmark Ruling Guarantees Canadian Workers Collective Bargaining Rights

Excerpt:

A coalition of health care unions in British Columbia scored a groundbreaking victory on June 8 when the Supreme Court of Canada struck down key provisions of the province’s Health and Social Services Delivery Improvement Act. Overturning two lower court decisions and a number of its own decisions dating back to the 1980s, the country’s top court ruled that collective bargaining is constitutionally protected as part of the guarantee of freedom of association in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. . . .

It’s not often that a union successfully blocks the impact of an anti-union National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruling. But our union, the Health Professionals and Allied Employees/AFT (HPAE), recently did just that through a combination of legal research, membership education and involvement, savvy public outreach, and coordinated bargaining among our local unions. . . .

These days, it’s impossible to make your way through Portland, Oregon without noticing the commercial construction boom. That steady boom was brought to a standstill June 1, however, by raucous picket lines. . . .

Service Employees End California Nursing Home Partnership

Excerpt:

Following months of criticism and sharp internal debate, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) ended its controversial partnership agreement with a group of California nursing homes on May 31. The four-and-a-half-year-old deal was a quid pro quo arrangement that brought over 3,000 workers into SEIU after the union secured higher state government payments to nursing homes that care for Medicaid patients. In addition to giving SEIU organizing access to a number of nursing homes, the agreement provided “template” contract language for these newly organized workplaces. . . .

Give Your Union a Dues Checkup

Excerpt:

Dues are the bricks and mortar of our labor movement, but in many unions dues are a taboo subject. From per capita taxes to initiation fees and special assessments, rank-and-file members rarely get a full picture of their own union’s dues structure, much less a sense of what’s happening across the labor movement as a whole. . . .

Working people in the United States are being hammered by twin crisis affecting what were once called “fringe benefits”: health care and retirement benefits.
The “new economy” is another name for an old bag of tricks where promise and reality don’t match up. E-workers counting on valuable stock options, a revolutionized workplace, and premier wages and benefits have instead gotten mediocre wages, useless stock options, relentless production pressure, and maximum job insecurity.

What is Single Payer Health Care? Why Would it Be Better?

Author(s):
Kip Sullivan

Excerpt:

A single-payer system is one in which one payer, namely a government agency like Medicare, reimburses providers (clinics and hospitals) directly. Those features — one payer for the public and direct payment to providers — are the main reasons why single-payer systems are so efficient. . . .

Viewpoint: AFL-CIO Endorses Medicare for All, While Change To Win’s Andy Stern Trashes It

Excerpt:

The AFL-CIO has finally endorsed a solution to the health care crisis that looks and sounds a lot like a singlepayer system. A statement released March 6 by the federation’s executive council during its meeting in Las Vegas did not use the phrase “single-payer,” but it heaped praise on Medicare, which is a rough approximation of a singlepayer program. Then the statement endorsed “building on Medicare to move toward a universal program” for the whole country. . . .

The first U.S. Social Forum will happen in Atlanta from June 27 through July 2. Inspired by the 1999 mass antiglobalization action in Seattle and the 2001 World Social Forum (WSF) in Brazil, 150 social forums have been held throughout the world, but none until now in the United States. . . .

Defeating Employee Free Choice Act Is Top Priority for the Union Busters

Excerpt:

The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is one of the most important pieces of legislation being considered by the new Congress, yet many working people have probably never heard of it. If they have, they have most likely heard the version that corporate America wants them to hear: that the bill would deny employees the right to vote in workplace elections and leave them exposed to coercion by unscrupulous union organizers. . . .

Excerpt:

Workers making the profitable Ford F-150 pickup in the Dearborn Truck Plant are witnessing company outsourcing inside their building, just a line over. As whole lines of Ford’s flagship plant get staffed by temporary workers not covered under UAW contracts, only the rank and file is showing up for the showdown. . . .

Legal Threats, Power Struggle Derail Conductors Strike at Canada’s Largest Railroad

Excerpt:

Nearly 3,000 United Transportation Union (UTU) conductors and yard service workers faced down Canada’s largest rail carrier, Canadian National (CN), in a two-week strike that began February 10. It was the second time in less than three years, that a small unit of rail workers shut down CN by taking advantage of the power that comes from being able to disrupt North America’s heavily-used, over-extended freight networks. . . .

Organizing "Big Boxes" is Big Challenge for Labor

Excerpt:

For the 15 million retail workers in the United States, the odds of being in a union are low. According to the nonprofit Labor Research Association, retail unionization was just 6.2 percent in 2003. While the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) has made some gains for grocery and food retail workers, workers in the rapidly expanding world of non-food retail stores and chains are barely a blip on organized labor’s radar. . . .

Excerpt:

There are many reasons why unions fail to win organizing campaigns, why they abort them soon after launching, and why many campaigns don’t get off the drawing board. These failures explain why unions are especially reluctant to target corporations that employ thousands of workers in multiple plants and facilities throughout the United States. . . .

The most ambitious labor-driven attempt in more than 25 years to win congressional approval of sweeping labor law reform is now before Congress. The goal is to remedy the outlandish violations of human and labor rights that are routinely visited on workers who attempt to organize a union in their workplace. . . .

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ annual report on U.S. union membership has, for years, sounded like a broken record: decline, decline, decline.
In Health Care Reform Debate, Single-Payer System is Labor’s Only Clear Choice

Excerpt:

Union members have a huge stake in the present debate on health care reform. At a time when employers routinely slash or eliminate health benefits for workers and their families or force union members on strike to preserve those benefits, when insurance plans routinely restrict workers’ choice of doctors and prescription drugs, and when more working families declare bankruptcy due to medical debt, only one reform can provide the health care security working people need: single-payer. . . .

Memory of 1997 Strike Strengthens Union’s Position: UPS and Teamsters Working for (Very) Early Contract Settlement

Excerpt:

The 1997 Teamsters strike against UPS was one of the biggest events for U.S. labor in the 1990s. Relying on rank-and-file member mobilization, innovative tactics, and a campaign that captured public support, the Teamsters (IBT) won a victory that buoyed union morale far and wide. Though the current UPS master contract is set to expire more than a year from now on August 1, 2008, Teamster officials opened up early negotiations with the company last year. Ken Hall, director of the Teamsters small package division, even announced recently that a possible settlement could be on the table as early as next month. . . .

Remembering Where Flowers Come from on Valentine’s Day

Excerpt:

Every year on Valentine’s Day, millions of Americans head to their local florist or supermarket to buy flowers for a friend, spouse, or family member. If there’s a romantic relationship involved, we’re mainly concerned about getting our gift to the recipient--on time. Few of us ever ask where all these flowers come from or who helped grow and pick them. . . .

“Gary Rusnell will come back inside over my dead body,” Detroit Newspapers labor relations boss Tim Kelleher once vowed. That was more than a year ago. A court had reversed the firing of Rusnell, a rank and file leader of the newspaper strike, and Kelleher was appealing. But recently, the court ordered management to take Rusnell back immediately while the case proceeds. Not wanting Kelleher to have to eat his words, members of the Workers Justice Committee dusted off a papier maché Tim Kelleher head that they’d stuffed with play money during the strike. They attached it to a mannequin body and laid it at the door, where Rusnell stepped over it on his way to claim his job in the composing room.

21 immigrant meatpackers were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers January 24 at the Smithfield Foods plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina. The Tar Heel plant’s 5,000 workers have been fighting to organize a union since the early 1990’s. Pro-union workers have faced fierce employer opposition, including retaliatory firings, beatings, and harassment...
