I am an Organizer for the Machinists Union. I am out of District 725 in So. California. The "choices" given to these workers are horrible. Who ever heard of 300 plus workers getting a sentence of 5 months in jail, then deported? And that is the lesser of the two options.
Then given ankle bracelets for ID? They are not animals. You cannot brand them and be their owners. If they were caught in a raid, then the worst they should expect is a trip back home.
These are the sort of underhanded, low tricks that we have come to expect when dealing with most employers nowadays. This gives them a big boost in running Anti-Union campaigns. The threat of getting arrested would all but kill a campaign. The busters following the Union Organizers around to house calling is so illegal, but knowing that nothing will be done even likely after filing charges.
To the organizer at this plant, hats off to you. This is a very hard if not impossible campaign. You have the support of Union brothers and sisters all over this land. No matter what organization it is, if it's Union, it's a house of labor and we will stand behind you.
