Egypt, Wisconsin, and the Bay: Lessons from democratic uprisings around the world
Monadel Herzallah is a Palestinian immigrant and advocate for the Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian communities. In his 30 plus years as a community leader, he has worked to raise awareness of anti-Arab hate crimes and defend civil liberties and immigrant rights. He is the co-founder and president of Arab American Union Members Council and is active with various labor and community organizations.
Herzallah will focus on the lesser-known role of workers in the Egyptian uprising, describing the organizing and strikes against Mubarak's regime, and the history of independent unionism outside of government control. Herzallah will also look at the new independent trade union federation that emerged out of Mubarak's fall, the worker struggle that continues even after the demobilization of the mass movement, and what it means for Egypt and a neoliberal agenda. His talk will conclude by seeking lessons for workers here in the US.
Pilar Schiavo is currently with National Nurses United, the largest and fastest growing union of direct care nurses. She has extensive union and political experience, having been a city legislative aide, San Francisco Labor Council political director, AFL-CIO political campaign director and union organizer and trainer. Her work has often included community and labor coalition-building and contributed to legislation providing San Franciscans living wages, Municipal ID cards for residents regardless of immigration status, and health care for the uninsured.
Schiavo will examine the roles of the mainstream union leadership, the Democratic Party and their relationship to the organizing in Wisconsin. The workshop will analyze various stages of the fight, the initial activity preventing the vote, the impact of the bill passing and the recall efforts. Drawing upon lessons learned, Pilar's talk will ask, where do we go from here?
